How to Identify and Diagnose Kitec Plumbing

1. Visual Identification

Kitec consists of an aluminum core sandwiched between inner and outer layers of plastic (PEX-AL-PEX). It is typically bright orange (hot water lines) and bright blue (cold water lines), stamped with brand names like Kitec, PlumbBetter, WarmRite, or KERRTEC.

2. Dezincification of Brass Fittings

The primary failure point of Kitec systems is the brass fittings. Chemical reactions leach zinc out of the alloy, forming a powdery white crust ("meringue deposit") on the outside while weakening the metal inside until the fitting snaps under municipal pressure.

3. Pipe Blistering and Delamination

Over time, hot water lines can develop micro-blisters where the outer PEX layer separates from the aluminum core, significantly increasing the likelihood of sudden wall blowouts.
